This webinar will take place on 19 November from 15.30 – 16.45 CET

For the RAN webinar on ‘An update on contemporary Islamist extremism and implications for P/CVE’ we are currently looking for participants.

The recent attacks in Nice and Vienna, the murder of Samuel Paty and other recent attacks and foiled plots, make it painfully clear that, after the physical fall of the so-called Caliphate, Islamist extremism and terrorism remains one of the biggest threats in Europe.

This is why, during this webinar, Dr Magnus Ranstorp (Swedish National Defence College, RAN), acclaimed expert and the lead author of the RAN Factbook on Islamist Extremism, will provide an update on the recent state of play of Islamist extremism in Europe. Questions discussed during the event include:

  • What has changed regarding Islamist extremism in Europe in recent months?
  • What are the key Islamist ideologies in Europe today?
  • How big of a threat do Daesh and al Qaida continue to be?
  • Which are the most relevant challenges for P/CVE practitioners, also in light of returning Foreign Terrorist Fighters and their families, violent extremist or terrorist offenders, and lone actors?

The aim of this meeting is to continue awareness-raising efforts about the key developments with regards to Islamist extremism, its main threats and challenges as well as recruitment and radicalisation. In addition to Dr Ranstorp, co-leaders of some RAN Working Groups will be given room to respond to the challenges and developments described and to reflect on their impact for their respective work fields (e.g. Rehabilitation, Local authorities).
